  • Retirement/Savings: Defined benefit, defined contribution, and stock purchase plans.
  • Health/Group: Medical, dental, flexible spending accounts, and post-retirement medical plans.

BASIC BENEFITS VALUATION ANALYSIS (BASIC BVA)

The Basic Benefits Valuation Analysis (Basic BVA) compares the value of benefits versus the custom peer group, including relative rank and index. This analysis generates a common dollar value for benefit plans with varying plan designs and provisions. Statistical comparisons create an “apples to apples” view of your plans to those of the peer group. Use Basic BVA for:

  • Positioning your plan benefits by rank and index.
  • Detailed descriptions of plan provisions for the peer group.
  • Using the market replacement value to show the estimated amount of pretax salary needed to replace the employer-provided benefits.
  • Synopsis of results, plus an optional PowerPoint.

Mercer removes impact of geographical differences, claims experience, and negotiating influences to hone analysis on design only.

ENHANCED BENEFITS VALUATION ANALYSIS (ENHANCED BVA)

The Enhanced Benefits Valuation Analysis (Enhanced BVA) is a custom, comparative, benchmarking report. It analyzes how benefit plans compare to the peer group in degrees of increasing specificity – by all plans together, by plan groupings, and by individual plans. Two significant elements that are not included in the Basic BVA are:

  1. For each degree of specificity, the Enhanced BVA displays the values and comparative results for 11 sample benchmark employees and a composite workforce. This shows how competitive benefits are within certain groups and compares internal equity.
  2. Displaying market replacement dollar values of each benefit plan along with the index that measures the ratios of your values to the median. For example, the average dollar value of a life insurance plan is $200 with an index of 100, while a defined benefit plan would be $6,800 and 100. It is clear that while the index is the same for both, the defined benefit plan is more valuable.

Profile Analysis

The overall competitive positioning of benefits plans is driven by a myriad of factors, such as level of employee and employer contributions, employee demographics and plan design. The Enhanced BVA includes an executive summary highlighting some of the key drivers and relates them to the prevalence in the market, and includes the market comparison report allowing for understanding of benefits by profile to assess plan design gaps or over-positioning to market.

Total Remuneration Index

The Total Remuneration Index (TRI) is the most complete and comprehensive report that expands on the Benefits Valuation Analysis by including employee salary — determining a Total Reward Value for jobs by combining the effect of the differences in both pay and benefit design. The TRI report helps you see how all the pieces fit together and if changes are needed. Use TRI for:

  • Extensive compensation and benefits benchmarking of up to 44 jobs (more jobs can be included at an additional cost).
  • Market analysis specific to your organization.
  • Benchmark your total remuneration values to a specific peer group.
  • Total rewards strategy development.
